Pristina, KOSOVO

I am pleased to report that our drive south to Pristina was very straightforward. This is a somewhat disputed part of the world. Kosovo is recognised as a sovereign state by 113 countries. But Serbians see Kosovo as the southern part of Serbia – despite the fact that Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Therefore it can be difficult with ‘border control’ between the 2 countries.

Fortunately our quickest driving route actually took us briefly into Macedonia before entering Kosovo – so crossing that border was less controversial. Nonetheless the Kosovan (or Kosovar) border authorities have clearly identified an additional revenue generating opportunity while Kosovo has its current unclear diplomatic status. Because they know that Kosovo does not appear on any of the standard car documents (Insurance green card and equivalents) they demand an ‘on the spot’ €15.00 payment. It is no doubt a very good earner for them.

After an initial mountainous drive we were soon zooming across the flat plains heading to the Kosovan capital, Pristina. It is neither a large bustling metropolis or an ancient historical town (ie. not a lot to see). So we kept to our plan of having a walk around the city centre and a quick bite of lunch before heading off to Albania.
